What brush should I use to repaint a wall?

Repainting a wall is within everyone’s reach, and allows you to change the design of a room at will. However, to do this, you still need to have the right equipment. Have you chosen the type of paint and the color? Let’s move on to choosing the brush to use to paint a wall.

The different types of brushes

In the building industry, painters and craftsmen do not use a single model of brush. Indeed, it is advisable to choose the brush according to the paint, the material of the surface to be painted, and the expected result. For all these criteria, there are several types of wall brushes.

  • The flat brush: very useful for smooth and uniform surfaces, this brush with dense and long bristles is not very suitable for relief walls;
  • The Spalter brush: this versatile brush is recognizable by its flat and very wide shape, which allows you to paint large surfaces efficiently and quickly;
  • The edging brush: pointed and very bushy, the round edging brush has a perfect shape for painting corners;
  • The angled brush: ideal for painting corners and hard-to-reach spaces, such as the back of a radiator, this brush has a handle with a more or less significant bend;
  • The stencil brush: thin and round, this brush allows you to be very precise.

Choosing a brush according to the type of paint

The quality and ease of application of a paint will depend on its shape, but also on compatibility with the paint. Indeed, each painting has its suitable brush.

The brush for water painting

Water-based paint is relatively complex to apply since the brush strokes remain visible after drying. It is therefore imperative to equip yourself with a suitable brush, which will allow you to cover the surface evenly, and smooth the paint well.

For this, the synthetic fiber brush is recommended, since the extreme fineness of the fibers allows a perfect smoothing of the paint, without leaving any marks. It will then be necessary to choose a brush with thick and dense bristles for liquid paint because it avoids forming drops, and a less provided brush for thick paint, to be able to work it easily.

The brush for oil painting

Oil paint has the advantage of reducing marks when drying. All you need is a natural silk brush to paint a wall with oil paint.

Using the natural silk brush with water-based paint is not recommended, as the material swells in contact with water.

Choose a brush according to the wall to be painted

In professional hardware stores you will find all kinds of wall brushes, which must be adapted to the paint, but also to the surface to be painted.

Painting an interior wall

While it is often recommended to paint large wall surfaces with a roller, more complicated spaces should be done with a brush: a round, pointed brush for corners and ceilings, a flat, angled brush for the back of a radiator, or a stencil brush for creating small decorations.

Painting an exterior wall

The exterior wall is often covered with plaster or a coating that protects it from bad weather and various attacks. It is therefore advisable to use a brush rather than a paintbrush to paint an exterior wall.
