How to sleep comfortably?
While beautiful summer days are conducive to spending quality time outdoors and refreshing activities by the pool or at the beach, hot nights quickly become uncomfortable. High temperatures often prove to be stifling, preventing us from falling asleep or can cause us to wake up in the middle of the night in a sweat. However, suffering from the heat at bedtime is not inevitable. Discover our tips for sleeping well during the summer.
Sleeping in the summer: the pajamas of employment
You wouldn’t go out in 35°C weather wearing a down jacket and fur-lined boots… When night falls, this common sense rule continues to apply to your outfit. Sleeping in pajamas remains a preference that many of us share, but if you don’t adapt your choice to the season, your comfort will suffer.
Swap your flannel pajamas for lighter men’s or women’s pajamas, made from a fabric that wicks away moisture and lets your skin breathe. 100% cotton pajamas, for example, are particularly recommended, as are models made from viscose or linen. There are many choices, so how do you choose the right pajamas?
Make sure to opt for less covering nightwear. Forget long sleeves and pants. You will gain by replacing them with sleeveless pajamas and short, loose bottoms.
Ventilate at the right time
To sleep in summer without suffering from the heat accumulated in your room, the ideal is to invite as much freshness as possible into the room while insulating it against torrid temperatures. The best times to air are early in the morning and late in the evening. If you can, don’t hesitate to sleep with the window open either.
During the day, however, it is best to close the shutters and curtains to keep your room cool.
A cooler bed
In the middle of summer, there is no question of sleeping with a cozy duvet: you will have to replace it with light sheets made of an airy material such as linen or cotton. Let’s take this opportunity to remind you that many mattresses have a “winter” side and a “summer” side. So also remember to turn yours the right way to better withstand the ambient heat while evacuating more of the heat released by your body.
If the temperature becomes hard to bear, a good trick is to place a cold – or even iced – hot water bottle in your bed half an hour before going to sleep.
Cool tips to avoid overheating
Finally, if you’re already too hot when it’s time to go to bed, you’ll have even more trouble sleeping in the summer. Staying hydrated, for example, is even more important when temperatures rise. It’s better to drink a few sips of water very regularly than to drink half a liter at once three times a day. A glass of water just before going to bed and a bottle of cold water within reach will also help you cope better with a hot night.
A lukewarm shower or bath before going to bed is very effective in lowering your body temperature and making it easier to fall asleep.
And if you have an air conditioner that you find too noisy, check to see if it has a “night” option that can keep you cool without sacrificing your need for silence.
There you have it, the best tips for enjoying a good night’s sleep even if the mercury has risen a little too much. By combining these different ideas, you will no longer have to fear the consequences of a heatwave on your sleep.
