Design is not reserved for the elite, as evidenced by the public access to the FIAC organized at the Grand Palais in Paris each year. Do you find that your interior lacks modernity and character or do you want to complete your collection of unusual objects? Turn to designer accessories to give your decoration a boost, and continue building an overall coherence, without changing all of your furniture or breaking the bank.
A short history of design for the curious
Design is a process of invention and improvement intended to facilitate use. Its role will be to respond to a specific need, to solve a problem, to propose an innovative solution to improve our quality of life. Design is at the crossroads of art, technology, and science.
Its history is closely linked to that of the Industrial Revolution. With the advent of mechanized production, artisans and artists were no longer the only manufacturers of objects.
Several artistic movements will follow one another, but one of its origins remains functionalism, which could be summed up by Louis Sullivan’s famous expression “form follows function”.
In Germany, in the 1920s, the Bauhaus followed, a school of curiosity, which was only slightly oriented toward mass production at the beginning. American capital made it possible in 1925 to establish industrial production of innovative furniture with a tubular structure by Marcel Breuer. the 1920s rhymed with Art Deco, which was part of a movement of modernity initiated by the Union of Modern Artists.
In the United States, the 1929 crisis pushed manufacturers to bring aesthetics to consumer products. The first industrial design agencies appeared to offer everyday objects inspired by aerodynamic shapes. Manufactured objects carry not only an aesthetic value but also a symbolic one, like the famous Coca-Cola bottle.
During the post-war period, designers adopted rounder and more fluid shapes, this was neo-modernism. Plastic materials replaced the steel tubes of the 1930s. Designers who are still very famous today appeared, such as Charles and Ray Eames with their famous chairs in the United States. Italy created its legendary Vespas and espresso machines.
Even today, design is at the heart of our daily lives: from our laptops to our desk lamps, from our favorite armchairs to our cars.
