Limit plastic in the garden

Gardening is an activity that produces a lot of waste: plants (dead leaves, weeds) but also plastics from various packaging. These feed the already too large quantity to hunt in our daily lives. It is therefore important to design and think about your garden differently by taking particular care in the choice of objects because the use of plastic is an ecological scourge. But how can we limit plastic in the garden and its impact on the health of gardeners, their entourage and their environment? We give you some tips to hunt down plastic, make gardening more ecological and preserve nature as best we can.

Local canvas vegetable garden bins

To limit the use of plastic in the garden, it is essential to think ahead about containers and tools; they must meet needs without harming the environment. Steel tools and wooden handles are informed choices. Regarding containers, new ecological materials are available to you: a geotextile vegetable garden bin is an alternative for the future. They should be chosen primarily from French manufacturing to limit transport and pollution. Canvas vegetable garden bins have a much longer lifespan than plastic containers, and are resistant to both cold and ultraviolet rays. Their manufacture does not use any fossil fuel. If you grow vegetables in them, they will be truly organic, unlike growing them in plastic containers that release bisphenol, accused of being an endocrine disruptor.

Several other gardening accessories can be replaced to reduce plastic: choose a bamboo stake over a plastic stake, give up your plastic watering can and use the terracotta or zinc watering can of our ancestors.

All these tools and vegetable gardens are more in harmony with nature and stand the test of time.

Favor organic solutions

Your garden waste must be recovered and used. Branches, grass cuttings, dead leaves are all solutions for mulching the soil naturally and avoiding the use of plastic sheeting. These natural recycled mulches prevent unwanted weeds from proliferating and help preserve soil moisture. These organic solutions promote biological life by serving as food for insects, for example. You can turn to organic mulches in garden centers such as flax mulches or bark. Plastic solutions should be used as a last resort.

On the compost side, you can make your wooden composter with pallets. It allows you to reduce the amount of household waste in the trash. You should always favor compost over incineration because the latter releases CO2. In addition, you can naturally feed your vegetable gardens thanks to this compost.

Choosing environmentally friendly furniture

Garden furniture often gives pride of place to plastic, which is cheaper: chairs, tables, deckchairs, swings, etc. However, it is preferable to turn to furniture made of noble and durable materials such as wood, for example. This furniture will go perfectly with your sustainable vegetable garden boxes. Wooden garden installations that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified indicate that the forest from which they come is managed responsibly and sustainably. This label guarantees you respect for the environment. Compared to plastic, the lifespan of wooden furniture is significantly longer. If you choose this solution, choose local woods to avoid producing waste during transport.
